How to care for your composting worms
Composting worms are low-maintenance but need the right environment to stay healthy and productive.
- Housing:
Use a worm bin, wormery, or compost heap with good drainage. Keep it dark and well-ventilated. - Temperature:
They thrive between 15–25°C. but can withstand temperature as low as 1°C to 30°C, for short periods. During colder months, insulate outdoor bins or relocate them to a sheltered area. In summer, keep them shaded and cool. - Bedding:
Start with moist bedding such as shredded cardboard, paper, coir, or partially composted leaves. Keep it as damp as a wrung-out sponge. - Feeding:
Feed your worms small amounts at first. Good options include:
- Fruit and veg peelings chopped up as small as possible
- Tea leaves and coffee grounds(avoid the bags as these contain micro plastics)
- Crushed eggshells
- Shredded paper and cardboard
Avoid:
- Meat or dairy( as they will attract pests)
- Oily or salty foods
- Large amounts of acidic scraps (like citrus or onions)
- Routine care:
- Check moisture regularly – add water if dry or cardboard if too wet
- Bury food scraps under bedding to reduce smells and fruit flies
- Harvest worm castings every few months to feed your plants
- Add fresh bedding occasionally to keep the environment balanced
With proper care, your composting worms will happily turn waste into rich, living compost all year round.
