Food Waste Collection – The Regulations and Law

The Environment Act 2021 includes provisions aimed at reducing food waste, which is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. As a business, it is important to be aware of these provisions and take steps to reduce your own food waste. Here are some key points to consider:

Food waste reduction targets

The Act sets out a target for the UK to reduce food waste by 20% by 2025, and to halve food waste by 2030. Businesses that produce, sell, or serve food should consider how they can contribute to meeting these targets.

Mandatory food waste reporting

The Act requires large businesses (with 250 or more employees) in the food sector to report on their food waste and publish the data. This includes food manufacturers, retailers, and food service providers. This reporting will be mandatory from 2024.

Redistribution of surplus food

The Act encourages businesses to redistribute surplus food to those in need, rather than sending it to landfill. The Act also enables the government to introduce regulations to require businesses to take reasonable steps to redistribute surplus food.

Biodegradable waste

The Act introduces regulations on biodegradable waste, including food waste. From 2023, businesses that produce biodegradable waste will be required to ensure that it is collected separately and treated in a way that allows it to be used for a beneficial purpose.

As a business, it is important to take action to reduce your food waste and comply with the requirements set out in the Environment Act 2021. This can include measures such as reducing portion sizes, improving inventory management, donating surplus food to charity, and composting food waste. By reducing food waste, you can not only reduce your environmental impact but also save money and improve your bottom line.
